Practice

Studio, Lineage, People, Careers, Contact

Sordo Madaleno’s international momentum stems from nearly a century shaping Mexico’s built environment. Three generations of practice have produced an archive that functions as living infrastructure: a scaffold for testing, questioning, and transforming inherited knowledge. Projects like San Ignacio de Loyola Church, Palacio de Justicia, Palmas 555, and Westin Regina Los Cabos helped define Mexico’s modern architectural landscape and continue to guide how the studio evolves.

Recent and ongoing work includes the New Collection Centre for Hungarian Museum of Natural History in Debrecen; El Molinón Stadium in Gijón—a large scale sports arena that extends into an activated civic realm; the masterplan for Ánima Village, a landscape-driven commerce zone and home to Arte Abierto—the first public art gallery in Los Cabos; the Canadian School in Puebla; the Atlas Academia Facility in Guadalajara; a commercial zone in Asunción, Paraguay designed as a publicly accessible park; a residential development in Marbella, Spain; and a public park project in Riyadh, KSA.

The studio has received over 200 design awards and nominations, including MCHAP, WAF, Dezeen, and Domus, and has won several international competitions across Saudi Arabia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Americas, and the Middle East, further consolidating its global presence.

People

Javier Sordo Madaleno Bringas, Chairman

Javier Sordo Madaleno Bringas

Chairman

Javier Sordo Madaleno Bringas has led Sordo Madaleno since 1985, succeeding his father Juan as the practice’s second generation. As Chairman of SOMA Group, he holds a rare dual position — architect and developer — that gave the studio a structural advantage few practices share: the ability to conceive, build, and develop at scale, on its own terms.

That position shaped the practice’s trajectory. Over four decades, Javier has overseen the construction of over nine million square metres, and the development of approximately 2.5 million square metres — a body of work spanning commercial, residential, hospitality, civic, and cultural typologies across Mexico. Antara, his signature mixed-use development in Polanco, redefined retail and public space in Mexico City and continues to evolve with a forthcoming expansion.

His contributions have been recognised with the Trayectorias Prize, Honorary Fellowships from the American Institute of Architects and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and the Medal for Merit in Arts and Sciences from the Legislative Assembly of Mexico City. He is an Emeritus Academician of the Mexican National Academy of Architecture, and earned his architecture degree from Universidad Iberoamericana in 1979.

Javier Sordo Madaleno De Haro, Principal

Javier Sordo Madaleno De Haro

Principal

Javier Sordo Madaleno De Haro is a Principal at Sordo Madaleno and a third-generation member of the family practice. He brings a dual fluency — architect and developer — that shapes how he approaches every project: with equal attention to design rigour, client relationships, and long-term value.

He grew up inside the practice, and through his leadership has built a body of work spanning hospitality, residential, mixed-use, and civic typologies across Mexico and beyond.

Recent and ongoing work includes the forthcoming expansion of Antara, the landmark mixed-use development in Polanco that has defined Mexico City’s approach to retail and public space for two decades. In Los Cabos, he is leading a constellation of projects — Anima Village, Arte Abierto Baja, Park Hyatt, and Soho House — together forming a design-led destination on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Javier is the founder of Arte Abierto, a foundation dedicated to bringing contemporary art and cultural programming into public life. He earned his architecture degree from Universidad Iberoamericana in 2008.

Fernando Sordo Madaleno De Haro, Principal

Fernando Sordo Madaleno De Haro

Principal

Fernando Sordo Madaleno De Haro is a Principal at Sordo Madaleno, establishing the studio’s first international design base as the third generation of the family. In 2023, he founded the London studio — now a team of 25 — marking a turning point in Sordo Madaleno’s near-century of practice and extending its reach as a design architect into new geographies and typologies.

He grew up inside the practice — across construction sites and design charrettes led by his father, Javier — developing a lasting attentiveness to craft, proportion, and the discipline of building. That grounding shapes how he works today — beginning with deep study of terrain, context, and community before form follows.

Recent and ongoing work includes the Collection Centre for the Hungarian Museum of Natural History in Debrecen — the studio’s first European cultural project, won through invited competition — alongside Anima Village and Arte Abierto Baja in Los Cabos, the Canadian School in Puebla, Atlas Academia in Guadalajara, a public park and commercial development in Asunción, a nature-led residential project in Marbella, and a public park in Riyadh.

Fernando is the founder of Obra, Sordo Madaleno’s transdisciplinary laboratory, open library, and public living room, turning the studio into a public destination for curiosity, testing, and dialogue. He has spoken at institutions including the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London and has been recognised with the Gran Premio CAM-SAM for Professional Merit, the XVIII National Biennial of Mexican Architecture, Premio Obras CEMEX, and The Plan Awards. He earned his architecture degree from Universidad Iberoamericana, graduating with honours.
